The turn of the century in France was an extraordinary cultural moment: in painting, literature, and music, there was a confluence of uniquely great artists like Monet, Ravel, Renoir, and Marcel Proust. Their openness to new ideas from more exotic climes, and the vibrant cafe culture where ideas were generously exchanged, made for a time of almost unparalleled artistic fecundity.
In this programme, we take the audience back to the salons of Paris in the early 20th century, showcasing not only the fragrant and exquisite world of song, but also exploring some writing from the time: we hear profound pyschological insight from Proust, and glorious music from Ravel, Fauré, and Reynaldo Hahn, Proust’s lover and sometime muse.
