St Peter’s Church, Radovljica
One of the most ravishing oratorios of the seventeenth century recounts the story of the beheading of St John the Baptist. Salome impressed King Herod with her dancing, and her mother Herodias persuaded her to ask for the head of John the Baptist whom she resented for forbidding marriage between blood relatives. Stradella’s oratorio was written for performance in the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome on Palm Sunday 1675. Further performances followed in Modena (1688), Florence (1693), and again in Rome (1698).
