St Peter’s Church, Radovljica
Renaissance polyphony – now directly from the original sources: first modern performance of a parody mass by Johannes Flori which only survives in Slovenia, and motets by Georg Prenner, born in Ljubljana
As is typical of Cappella Pratensis’ approach, the performance is sung directly from historical notation, with the singers huddled around a single large choirbook, communicating the nuances of rhythm and phrasing through various gestures and physical touch. Unlike a modern choral score, the notation requires performers to make decisions in real time about issues such as text-placement and unwritten accidentals, and the plainchant is decorated with historical techniques of improvised counterpoint. The result is a creative and flexible approach to performance which is inherently grounded in historical practice.
