The Byzantine tradition of ecclesiastical chant was inherited from the Holy Hymnographers of the Orthodox Church. Its apparent simplicity belies a complexity of modes and scales, rhythms and melodic formulas, ethos and yphos (style). The Byzantion Choir conjures up the liturgical atmosphere of the most important feast, the Service of the Resurrection, as it was sung for centuries both in Byzantium and in the well-known Romanian monasteries of Moldavia.
