Programme: Franz Schubert
Performances of Schubert’s music on historical instruments have become a frequent feature of the festival. Schubert’s masterly Piano Trio in E-flat major was written in 1827 and is among the few late works which the composer heard performed before his death. The outstanding Russian cellist Alexander Rudin also plays the arpeggione – the rarely-used instrument invented by Viennese luthier Johann Georg Stauffer, for which Schubert wrote his popular sonata.
